Funny things people say to me as a T1 Diabetic
When I first got diagnosed my doctor warned me that people would say a lot of dumb stuff. And boy was he right haha. And I know that most people are just uneducated on this topic, but some things should just remain unsaid lol. So here is a list of funny (but also kind of hurtful) things people have said to me or asked me.
#1. Wow, you're lucky you get to eat candy all the time.
Oh yes, super blessed. Haha. Candy is not very tasty when you feel like your dying, just saying.
#2. Remember when you were healthy.
Ouch. This one really did hurt. Because I really try to be healthy, and Diabetes does not make me unhealthy. If anything, I know a lot more about nutrition and fitness than most people.
#3. So like, you have a needle in you?
I don't even know how to respond. It's actually a catheter, but I don't know if it would be better to tell them I have a toothbrush bristle type thing in my body or not.
#4. You can't make treats, because you can't have sugar.
What. What. I started my own bakery business. Take that.
#5. So if you are low, you have to give yourself a shot?
NO. And I will not be asking you for help haha.
#6. Do your shots hurt?
No, they feel like rainbows and clouds. YES THEY HURT. It's a needle.
#7. I can bring you something different since you can't eat sugar.
I can eat whatever I want to thank you very much.
#8. Is that a pager?
Haha. Yes.
#9. My uncle had Diabetes. He lost weight and got rid of it.
Oh wow. I bet you're also going to tell me I can cure my Diabetes with Cinnamon. Seriously. Where is this coming from haha. There is no cure yet.
#10. Oooo can I watch you prick your finger?
Well, um I guess. I mean, what am I supposed to say.
#11. Is that the bad kind?
Um, is there a good kind? Because I'd like to get some of that.
#12. If your pancreas is dead, why can't you just get it removed?
Just don't talk anymore.
Well, these are just some of the funny things people have said. And this was not meant to be rude to anyone. A lot of people have actually asked me a lot of really good questions, and I love answering them. Just be careful before you make fun of Diabetes, because there are a lot of things you probably don't understand.
